…ou want to talk about to your new friends is how “things are different back home, let me tell you”. After a few years you’ll realize this is boring for everyone, including yourself. It makes for good small talk, but doesn’t get you to deeper, more relevant conversations.
I think this bit might be US-centric. When you are a foreigner in Europe, you don’t even need to bring up the subject: people will take the initiative to ask about the peculiarities of life in your home country and listen with genuine interest. I’ve found cultural differences to be a never-ending source of material for both small-talk and deep conversations.
